One cannot talk about the smooth tasting Rwandan Coffee without talking about the gracious Rwandan Farmers, who in spite of the tragedy suffered still find reason to exude hope and to welcome others into their lives. This graciousness is also manifested in the care given their plants and their attention to the smallest detail when in the milling and selection processes. It was their decision to take their coffee to the next level of being able to compete with specialty coffees from the coffee sourcing world. The decision is paying off as their income increases and the world demand grows. They are well aware that people they may never see are welcoming the rays of the morning sun all over the world with cups of ROOTS JAVA COFFEE nestled in their hands. The future of the Rwandan farmers looks bright as they continue to strive for excellence and personal satisfaction as they employ new techniques and modern methods of cultivating, planting and nourishing their crops. These proud famers want to make sure that the coffee beans from the Mountains of Rwanda are holding a coveted place in the coffee world. At African Bean Company, they know this to be true.
African Bean Company
African Bean Company is an African-American owned national coffee supply company founded by Fitz Hill. While on a trip to the continent of Africa, he had the opportunity to visit the coffee farms within the country of Rwanda and to meet many of the incredible and entrepreneurial farmers, many of whom had survived the horrific Rwandan genocide. Hill was captivated by their “will” to succeed and equally taken with their great tasting coffee. Their stories of advancing their coffee to being among the “most sought after” reignited his personal entrepreneurial passion. Needless to say, the Rwandan farmers captured his heart and head. Upon his return to the United States, driven by the passion he observed among the Rwandans, he wasted no time in pulling his dream and thoughts together as he aligned himself with an international coffee import company and roaster. In 2010, African Bean Company was born and became the home of the ROOTS JAVA coffee brand.
In 2012, Hill expanded his vision by bringing in as a partner, Clifton Taulbert who serves as the President and CEO of African Bean Company. Taulbert, a recognized entrepreneur quickly found himself captivated by the possibilities of entering the coffee business and welcomed the opportunity to connect with Africa and coffee drinkers throughout the United States. Their plans were big and bold. “Today Rwandan Arabica Coffee beans serve as the source for ROOTS JAVA COFFEE, bringing its smooth taste to corporate customers and to retail customers nationwide via our online store,” says Taulbert.
Rwandan Coffee typically has notes of dried red fruits like raisin and plum, and citric acidity to support the generally rich characteristics of the cup.
Rwanda, like its other East African neighbors, grows mostly Bourbon and Bourbon derivative varieties. These coffees are known for their extreme sweetness and big bodies.
Rulindo (1775 MASL) Located in the northern province on Rwanda, Rulindo offers one of the finest coffees in the country. Rulindo has all the necessary characteristics to produce exceptional coffee, fertile red-soil, only Arabica varieties, and the people’s will to produce excellent coffee.
Gishamwana Coffee Island: What an amazing coffee farm location! This project is literally located in the middle of Lake Kivu. Coffee is transported by boat to be processed on the mainland. They have over thirty five thousand coffee trees planted with environmental harmony in mind. This farm is in transition to becoming certified organic and is currently farmed with organic farming practices amongst forestry that provides a level of shade much greater than typical African coffee. Also, by nature of Gishamwana's isolation from other coffee, many of the other natural coffee diseases and pests quite simply have not made the boat over.
Kigeyo organic washing station: This washing station is high, even in a country where most of the washing stations are high to start with. Up at 1900 meters (and collecting coffee from another 200 meters up on the hillsides, Kigeyo was built in 2009 by Emmanuel of to get there the good coffees are. We had this coffee done in the Kenyan double fermentation style and have been very impressed with the results.

Southern Province and Eastern Province
The Southern and Eastern Provinces of Rwanda have incredibly high elevations, but they do not yet account for a large percentage of the total specialty coffee production in the country. There are motivated specialty coffee producers in these areas and they are of extreme interest to our sourcing team. As our sourcing operations continue to develop in Rwanda, we may be seeing more gems from these parts of the country.
Maraba coffee (Kinyarwanda: Ikawa ya Maraba; French: Café de Maraba) is grown in the Maraba area of southern Rwanda.
Maraba's coffee plants are the Bourbon variety of the Coffea arabica species and are grown on fertile volcanic soils on high-altitude hills. The fruit is handpicked, mostly during the rainy season between March and May, and brought to a washing station in Maraba, where the coffee beans are extracted and dried. At several stages, the beans are sorted according to quality. The farmers receive credits based on the amount and quality of the beans they provide.
The beans are sold to various roasting companies, with the best beans going to Union Coffee Roasters of the United Kingdom, who produce a Fairtrade-certified brand and Community Coffee of the United States. Rwanda Specialty Coffee Roasters buys from Maraba and sells to the domestic market. Maraba coffee is also brewed into a beer.
About 2,000 smallholder farmers grow the coffee plants under the Abahuzamugambi cooperative, founded in 1999. Since 2000, the cooperative has been supported by the National University of Rwanda (NUR) and the PEARL. The cooperative has improved coffee quality and penetrated the speciality market.
