Getting into Coffee

Have you ever been overwhelmed by a coffee menu?  Wondering what it all means?  We’re here to arm you with some valuable coffee information.  We’ll start with the basics…

There’s light roast and dark roast… so what’s the difference? 

When coffee beans are harvested- they’re all green.  The green beans are sent off to roasters who will consider their customers’ preferences and the quality of the beans before roasting. With dark roast…the beans are roasted for a longer period of time and at higher temperatures.  The flavor is bittersweet and some of the subtle flavors from the original flavors dull.  A light roast brings out the character of the bean; it’s a tad sweet and gives off a floral aroma. Think of it like eating steak.  A light roast can be compared to a medium rare fillet and a dark roast- a well-done strip. Both are delicious with different textures and flavors and suitable for different occasions.

You see Arabica and Robusta… we’ll explain. These are two different species of coffee and all of the coffee on earth falls under one of these categories.  The names represent the two different kinds of coffee plants. Robusta coffee plants grow at higher altitudes, produce fruit fairly quickly, and come from Africa and Indonesia.  When it comes to flavor, it’s strong, with twice as much caffeine as Arabica. It’s delicious, but not quite as popular as Arabica, as it represents about 30% of the world’s coffee.  Now onto Arabica- the beans primarily come from Latin America and tend to be more expensive. The taste is sweeter and softer with a lot less caffeine.  It’s pretty trendy, representing 70% of the world’s coffee.

With so many options how do you choose? Start experimenting! Try a dark-roasted Robusta when you make an espresso and a medium-roasted Arabica for your regular coffee drinking. Start here and then try it all. Pretty soon, you’ll be an expert!
